Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some answers to our most frequently asked questions - if you need any further information or your question is not answered, please get in touch.

Can JMatPro® calculate property X?

The best place to start is the demo (click on ‘Try our demo’ button in the bar above). The demo does not allow you to make new calculations however you can access pre-calculated data. All available calculations for each material are laid out here so you can see exactly what JMatPro® can offer. If still in doubt,  please get in touch with [email protected].

Does JMatPro® require an external thermodynamic database?

No, JMatPro® does not require an external thermodynamic database, it is included with the software. Properties are then calculated using physically based models.

What license types do you offer?

We offer annual and perpetual licenses. The first year of a perpetual license comes with maintenance included. Maintenance is not obligatory but gives you access to our help-desk of experts as well as to all new version releases and updates over the period. It cannot lapse so if your maintenance expires, you can either pay the back-dated maintenance or an upgrade fee to the latest version, whichever is most cost effective.

I only need a few calculations and I don’t have the money for a license - can you provide calculations for me?

If you just need to data for a few materials, we can certainly make calculations on demand. This would be especially useful if the data is for input into 3rd party simulation software for casting/forming/welding/advanced manufacturing/heat-treatment... etc applications as JMatPro® allows the provision of such material files for many such packages.

Can JMatPro® be shared amongst my colleagues?

The standard JMatPro® license is a single user license to be used by any employees whose normal place of work is the installation site. This standard license is a networked single-user, i.e. only one user is allowed at a time. Additional concurrent users are able to be provided at an additional licensing cost. If more than one site requires the use of JMatPro® we can also quote for that but it cannot be shared amongst sites.

I have an unusual installation set-up, what can I do?

You can check out our troubleshooting guide which shows installation scenarios from page 5 onwards. If this doesn’t cover your particular case or if you have any questions, we are always available to help at [email protected]

What happens if I need to change my computer? Can I save my compositions?

Absolutely!

When JMatPro® starts look in the terminal and it will say JMatPro will run in: ,,, This will give you the base folder where files are stored.

- All results are in material files in base_folder/materials.

- Exported data is in base_folder/export

- Saved compositions are in base_folder/inits/compos.ini

These files can be copied from one installation to another.

We do everything possible to make sure that calculations made in older versions can still be loaded using a new version.

Do you have a user training guide?

No, we do not have a user training guide. JMatPro® is not a CAE/FEA/FEM software and is very intuitive and easy to use. In case there are questions we are always available to answer them by e-mail/phone/web-meeting. It is however useful to have at least basic knowledge in materials science to understand the calculations made and the input required.

Is there are Linux version?

JMatPro® is only for Windows OS. It is however possible to install a Windows virtual machine on a linux based computer and run JMatPro® in the virtual machine, it is not officially supported but we know that several of our clients work this way.

Do I need a physical dongle?

Yes, JMatPro® requires the use of a physical dongle but there are various ways this can be incorporated into your setup and network. You will need to have somewhere to physically connect this dongle, however, if your license server is virtual, you can consider using an over-the-network USB solution. What is the difference between the API and the MPO?

The API is a programming tool - a library, i.e., a collection of functions. It gives the user access to several JMatPro® modules and allows the user to write their own code using those functions. It's a very flexible and powerful tool, since the user can structure the code to solve whatever problem they have in mind (within the scope of the API capabilities).

The MPO is more targeted than the API. It doesn't require any coding, it's a separate software with its own interface. It is designed to optimise alloy compositions, so in a way it does the reverse of what JMatPro® can do. In JMatPro® the properties are calculated from the composition, but often the ideal composition is unknown. Instead, users may have a better idea of the properties they want to achieve. The MPO tackles this optimisation problem, by exploring a composition range and returning promising candidates that satisfy the property requirements.

Both the API and MPO are add-on products and require you to hold an existing JMatPro®  license for the corresponding alloy with up-to-date maintenance.

Who is the API designed for?

The API should be of interest in the following cases:

 - for users running a lot of JMatPro® calculations - with the API they can automate this process

 - for users doing research/developing new models - this usually requires thermodynamic or property data, which the API can calculate

Will the MPO be useful for me?

The MPO should be of interest for users working in alloy design, i.e., developing new materials.
